AOA operated round-trip flights from Boston, Massachusetts, to London via Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador and Foynes. It was the first international carrier to serve Philadelphia International Airport and Shannon Airport.

03 OCT 1946, Stephenville, Dominion of Newfoundland. A DC-4, Registration: N90904 named "Flagship New England", took off from Stephenville runway 07 at 05:00 and continued in a straight line before colliding with a steep ridge, 7,1 mile past the runway. 39 Fatalities'

PROBABLE CAUSE: "The action of the pilot in maintaining the direction of take-off toward higher terrain over which adequate clearance could not be gained."

AOA was acquired by and merged into Pan American World Airways in 1950.
